There was a mixture of sun and showers in Hellisgerði over the weekend. The City of Hafnarfjörður celebrated the centenary of Hellisgerði on Saturday, and on Sunday, Litla Álfabúðin hosted its annual Álfahátíð in collaboration with the municipality. Resilient residents of Hafnarfjörður did not let the torrential rain on the centenary stop them, and turned up smartly dressed for the celebration with umbrellas. They listened to a speech from the mayor and gentle tunes, and took part in historical walks and chats about life in Hellisgerði over the past few decades. Among the guests were three siblings who lived in Hellisgerði. Two brothers who were born in the house that now houses the Little Elf Shop, and a sister who moved there when she was two years old.
Visit the garden in sunshine and flowers
Renovation work in Hellisgerði began in 2022 to mark the centenary, and this summer work has been carried out in the festival area by the stage and the Little Elf House. The lawn has been improved, new paths and seating platforms have been installed, and final surfacing work is underway around the heart. The garden is in full bloom, with flowerbeds and beautiful decorations placed in well-chosen spots. A historical information board about Hellisgerði has been erected next to the heart at the entrance to the park from Reykjavík Road. Work in the garden will continue into the autumn, weather permitting. Residents of Hafnarfjörður and friends of the town are encouraged to visit the garden and enjoy it at its most colourful time of year; in late summer. Otherwise, Hellisgerði has the charm to be delightful all year round.
