On Saturday, 11 October at 15:00, Hafnarborg celebrates the opening of Thórir Gunnarsson's solo exhibition, Eldingar, to mark Thórir being the artist for List án landamæra 2025. In the exhibition, Þórir Gunnarsson, who also goes by the artist name The Art-Puppet, leads us into a visual world that is both personal and full of playful joy. Thórir draws inspiration from all around his local environment – such as bus journeys and runs, or from nature – but he has an inexhaustible interest in people and sport, both as an avid supporter and a practitioner, having taken part in marathons, among other things.
Passion and vitality
In Thór's work, one can discern a passion and vitality that springs from diligence, zeal, and a great need for creativity. He works primarily with drawing and watercolour, approaching the media with curiosity and intuition. Drawings created on his bus journeys also become the source for works that capture scenes from daily life and the ever-changing moment, where layer upon layer of material and ideas creates a new reality. Þórir works at Listvinnslan as an artist, consultant and assistant teacher, and has focused on increasing access to culture and art education for disabled people. For this pioneering work, he received the Developmental Aid Breakthrough Award in 2021. He has also been named the Artist in Residence of Mosfellsbær and has exhibited his work widely, including at the Nordic House, the Gerðarsafn Museum and the Reykjavík Art Museum. Thórir is not only a visual artist but also a cultural promoter and music lover who enjoys meeting people and being in a creative community. With this exhibition, he invites viewers to feel the force that drives him – the joy of life, movement, creation, and conversation with others – like a spark that illuminates and ignites new ideas.
