Working outside of normal service hours to catch up on delays.

Residents have not been unaffected by the significant disruption and delays to rubbish collection over the past few days and weeks. Emptying of both the green and blue bins is now 10 days behind schedule, and the reasons for this are multifaceted. Initially, snowfall and road conditions, followed by bank holidays over the Christmas period, caused delays. Additionally, the technology, equipment and staffing of the waste collection service by the service provider have had a significant impact, making it difficult to catch up on the delays. At present, longer shifts are being worked and hours outside of normal service times are being put in.

Ensure access to the bins

Residents are still urged to clear a space around their rubbish bins to allow refuse collectors to empty them as the lorry passes through the neighbourhood. Residents are encouraged to take any excess paper and cardboard from the Christmas festivities to the Sorpa recycling centre at Breiðhellu themselves. You can easily find information on collection dates for your specific address (regardless of current delays) on the council's website under 'Rubbish Collection': https://hafnarfjordur.is/thjonusta/umhverfi-og-samgongur/sorphirda/. The refuse collection calendar normally allows for a three-day flexibility in collection, and therefore more than one date is shown on the calendar. Under the contract, the grey bin is collected every 14 days and the blue bin every 28 days.
