Little to no organic waste, thanks to the hens at home.

Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, the Mayor of Hafnarfjörður, was today presented with a plastic bin and a paper bag for collecting food scraps at her home. She is eagerly awaiting a new bin which will be delivered to her neighbourhood in the first week of June. For years, Rósa has been an active recycler at home and welcomes the harmonised system between the municipalities in the capital region. Her hens at home ensure that organic waste is usually minimal, and from now on, organic waste will be sorted into two. Only the food scraps that the hens are not allowed to eat will go into the two-chambered food waste bin.

The three-barrel principle for detached houses

The distribution of dual-chamber bins for food waste and mixed waste will begin in Holt, Hafnarfjörður, on Monday. All single-family homes in Hafnarfjörður will receive one new dual-chamber bin for food waste and mixed waste, and multi-family homes will receive new bins for food waste. At the mayor's home, one such bin will be added. The two existing bins will be re-labelled for plastic and paper respectively. „From the change, residents in Hafnarfjörður, as in the entire capital region, can sort waste directly into four categories at their kerbside at home, using containers for plastic, paper, food waste and mixed waste. Other types of waste must be taken directly to the appropriate containers at Sorpa or to nearby kerbside containers, where applicable.“ says Rósa. „I encourage residents to make the most of the summer to get to grips with the new sorting and find the right rhythm.“  Residents in Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to try a new system and a number of bins this summer and into the autumn to get the best feel for their household's needs, and particularly for the sorting of paper and plastic. The collection frequency will remain the same: every 28 days for plastic and paper, and every 14 days for food and mixed waste. In the autumn, it will be possible to purchase another 240L dual-compartment bin for plastic and paper and switch to a 240L plastic bin and a 240L paper bin if such a combination and arrangement is satisfactory and more suitable.

All residents will receive a new bin, a plastic basket and a paper bag.

The distribution of new and replacement rubbish bins in Hafnarfjörður will begin on Monday, 22 May in Hvaleyrarholt and will end on Friday, 14 July in Vogar. All residents in Hafnarfjörður will also receive a plastic bin and paper bags. The paper bags are crucial for producing usable compost from food waste.
