A strong school system in Hafnarfjörður
Around 4,000 children and young people will be starting school this autumn in the primary schools. Of these, over 350 children will be starting their primary school education for the first time in Year 1. Further information about timetables and the start times for each school can be found at the website of the relevant school. In Hafnarfjörður, there are 11 primary schools, 9 run by the town, but the Hjallastefnan Primary School and NÚ are independent and about 300-350 children from Hafnarfjörður attend primary school outside the town's schools, i.e. in independent schools, special schools or in the primary schools of other local authorities.
Starting primary school is a big step in every child's life. A strong home-school partnership is extremely important at such a milestone. A supportive home environment and good collaboration are essential for children and young people to thrive at school and to recognise their own strengths.
Quality food in primary schools
Children and staff in nurseries and primary schools in Hafnarfjörður receive high-quality meals at school. The municipality of Hafnarfjörður has entered into an agreement with the company Í-mat for the coming years, and all the town's schools and after-school clubs will receive their meals from them. By partnering with Í-mat, Hafnarfjörður is taking an important step towards creating a healthy nutritional environment for the children of Hafnarfjörður.
Students' lunch is free and does not need to be ordered in advance. The plan is for there to be two dishes available at lunchtime for students to choose from; meat/fish or vegetarian dishes, with vegan options included where applicable. The choice is made on the spot between these, not in advance (so it's possible one dish might run out before the other, meaning some students may miss out on having a choice of two dishes on a given day).
Parents can continue to choose whether their child brings a morning snack to school or buys fruit through an I-mat subscription. The same applies to special diets, which are subject to a medical certificate for allergies or intolerances and must be applied for on the I-mat website, along with the necessary supporting documents.
As extensive changes are forthcoming this winter with a new member of staff, it may take some time to establish a smooth running operation. We ask for everyone's forbearance and patience during the initial phase of these changes.
Stationery for students
The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður will continue to provide primary school pupils with textbooks free of charge, but pupils will now have to provide their own stationery for use in their schoolwork. Pupils therefore receive notebooks, folders and other such items from the school, which they need for their daily schoolwork in addition to the textbooks.
Yes, there's a buzz in the air. The children are settling into a routine and life in Hafnarfjörður is taking on its autumn colours.
