Just over 4,000 children and young people start school

The school term began in Hafnarfjörður's primary schools this morning, and formal lessons for pupils will start as per the timetable tomorrow, Thursday, 24th August. This autumn, just over 4,000 children and young people will be starting school in the primary schools, of whom nearly 400 are beginning their primary school education. In Hafnarfjörður, there are 11 primary schools, 9 run by the municipality of Hafnarfjörður, while the Hjallastefnan Primary School and NÚ are independent.

The weather was kind to those present at the opening of Lækjarskóli.

The staff of Lækjarskóli took a rather unconventional approach to their school opening, relying on the weather gods for the ceremony this morning. All pupils, parents, guardians and staff were invited to the school grounds for the start of term at 9 a.m., and the 2023-2024 academic year was kicked off outdoors this year, in the company of the entire school community.

The opening ceremony was most festive, with the headteacher and artists from the school among those taking to the stage. The weather was kind to those present, and it seems that cheerful children and young people are eagerly awaiting the upcoming school year. Leading the way in excitement are likely the Year 1 pupils themselves, who left their nursery school this summer and are now experiencing life at a new stage of schooling.
