According to information from the Road Administration, there is little traffic on this section of road. The road is not gritted during the winter months and there are steep road slopes in many places. It is considered important to consider water protection in this area, as the Bláfjallavegur largely runs through a water protection zone. The main route to Bláfjöll is from the Suðurlandsvegur.

The Town Council agrees that the southern part of Bláfjallavegur will be closed for the time being for water protection reasons, from Leiðarendi east to junction 417-01. In the opinion of the Town Council, a further environmental and risk assessment of the road section is required, and it is requested that the Environment and Operations Committee commission such an assessment to be submitted by the end of 2021 at the latest. Decisions regarding the future of the road will then be made.
