The distribution of new rubbish bins is proceeding according to plan.

News

Residents are encouraged to practise correct sorting from the moment they receive their new bin. Incorrect sorting will prevent it from being emptied. The introduction of the new waste sorting system in Hafnarfjörður has gone well and is on schedule. The distribution of new rubbish bins is now complete in Hvaleyrarholti, Vesturbær, Miðbær, Ásland, Suðurbær south and Norðurbær. This week, distribution began in Setberg and Suðurbær north.

New rubbish bin on its way to residents in Setberg and the northern part of Suðurbær

The implementation of a new waste sorting system in Hafnarfjörður has gone well and is on schedule. The distribution of new waste bins is now complete in Hvaleyrarholt, Vesturbær, Miðbær, Ásland, Suðurbær south and Norðurbær. This week, distribution began in Setberg and Suðurbær north. Next week, 3–7 July, distribution will begin in Hraunamót and it is planned that the distribution of new bins in Hafnarfjörður will conclude in Vellir on 10–14 July.

Number of rubbish bins per household

For each detached property (single, semi-detached and terraced houses), a two-chambered bin for food waste and mixed waste is provided for each property number. For multi-unit properties, a brown bin for food waste is added, with the number of bins tailored to the number of properties. Existing bins are re-labelled for the correct category, and households at each property address are provided with a plastic bin, a roll of bin bags, a bracket and a leaflet on the four-stream household waste collection system. Single-family homes will, upon completion of the rollout, have a 240L two-chamber bin for food waste and mixed waste, a 240L bin for plastic packaging, and a 240L bin for paper. Multi-dwelling properties will be provided with 240L bins for food waste, 240L/660L bins for mixed waste, 240L/660L bins for plastic packaging, and 240L/660L bins for paper upon completion of the rollout. The number of containers is determined by the number of property reference numbers in each building.

If residents of areas that have already received new rubbish bins believe something has been missed in the distribution, they are encouraged to send an email to sorpflokkun@hafnarfjordur.is to let us know. The council's staff are trying to respond quickly and efficiently.

Fifteen hard-working staff and the boss

Fifteen hard-working staff implementing a new waste sorting system in Hafnarfjörður have been working hard to assemble and label brown bins for blocks of flats and dual-chamber bins for detached houses, as well as distributing them to the neighbourhoods and re-labelling older containers. Verkherinn, a job scheme for young people with disabilities, has contributed to the project by bagging plastic baskets, newspaper bags, fasteners and leaflets, as well as applying stickers to the new containers.

Residents generally satisfied with the new arrangement

It is pleasing to report that residents have generally welcomed the new rubbish sorting system and the new collection bins. The City of Hafnarfjörður's customer service has been on hand to assist residents and answer any questions or comments. The main challenges of the implementation have been the weather, which has been rather wet so far this summer. Mistakes from the first weeks of implementation have been instructive and used to minimise further errors, although they can always occur. The project manager handles any deviations, which are generally resolved within a few days.

Let's get the correct classification right from the start – incorrect classification will prevent emptying.

Alongside the distribution of new rubbish bins in each neighbourhood, rubbish is collected, older bins are re-labelled, and a grace period is given until the next collection. This marks the formal start of the sorting scheme. Particular attention is drawn to the fact that if incorrect sorting is found in the bin at the next collection after new bins and re-labelling have taken place, a notice will be left stating that the bin has not been emptied. Residents will then need to sort the waste themselves and the bin will be emptied at the following collection. Residents are encouraged to start sorting correctly as soon as the new bins are delivered.
