A women's strike has been called for Tuesday, 24th October, under the slogan „Do you call this equality?“. The strike will affect services provided by the City of Hafnarfjörður, such as museums and swimming pools, but services concerning people's welfare and safety will be guaranteed.

Women and queer people are encouraged to take part in the organised programme.

Around forty organisations of women, queer people and working people are organising a full-day women's strike on 24 October, and women and non-binary people who are able to are being asked to walk out. Hafnarfjörður wholeheartedly supports the equality struggle of women and gender-diverse people and agrees with the core principles of the women's strike that traditional women's work should be properly valued and on a par with men's work. It should be noted that the City of Hafnarfjörður has implemented an equal pay policy and received equal pay certification, and pays equal wages for work of equal value regardless of gender or other factors.

Hafnarfjörður will seek every means to enable women and kvár to take time off work and participate in an organised day programme, and to show solidarity in the fight for gender pay equality. Some municipal services are essential and cannot be completely suspended. Every effort will be made to maintain services in all areas to ensure that the welfare, safety and health of the public are not put at risk in any way. The absence of women and non-binary people to participate in the organised programme, with the approval of a manager, will not be considered unauthorised, nor will it be deducted from their pay.

Let's show solidarity

On this day, there will be a half-term holiday in the town's primary schools, but nurseries will remain open where applicable. With a concerted effort, we can ensure that as many women and non-binary people as possible can take part in the women's strike, and parents are therefore asked to keep their children at home or take them to work with them if this is reasonably possible. This makes it easier for the women and kvár who work in nurseries to take part in the day's programme. Reduced services can be expected at facilities run by the City of Hafnarfjörður, such as swimming pools and museums, and residents and other visitors are asked to be understanding. Let us show solidarity with women and kvár and do everything in our power to ensure as many people as possible can take part in the day.
