The Hafnarfjörður Run is a 10km road race with a course that has been certified by the Athletics Association of Iceland. An effort has been made to limit bends and hills in the race, so the course should be ideal for setting a personal best. The race will start on Strandgata at Thorsplan and run along Strandgata towards the Suðurbær swimming pool. From there, Suðurbraut is run, crossing the stream and up Álfaskeið where a very flat and fast section follows. The route then passes through the lava fields and into the North End of Hafnarfjörður, where the runners will run along Hjallabraut, Breiðvang and Norðurvang, among other streets. Next, runners will take a short loop in Garðabær around Garðaholt to Herjólfsgata, where a fast final section with a gradual descent begins, ending back at Thorsplan.
Varied programme at Thorsplan
A varied programme will be available before and after the race, where spectators and competitors can try their hand at various athletics challenges. There will be a drinks station at the 5km mark and another at Thorsplan at the finish. Competitors can make use of a baggage storage service during the race, as well as toilet facilities. After the race, all participants will be offered the chance to swim at the Suðurbæjarlaug, which will be open until midnight for the occasion (subject to the ongoing strike being called off). Glorious prizes on offer.
