Hamarri Youth Centre receives Green Flag certification for the second time

Hamarri Youth Centre received the Landvernd Green Flag certification for the second time this week. Hamar was the first youth centre in the country to receive this mark of quality at the end of 2020. Ever since the youth centre first applied for the Green Flag certification in the autumn of 2019, ambitious environmental improvement goals have been central to all its activities.

Global justice, public health and ecosystem restoration

Hamarin has an active environmental committee, and environmental issues are a guiding principle in all their work. The 2023 Green Flag certification is a recognition of this work and its goals of global justice, public health and ecosystem restoration. January at Hamrinn is always dedicated to environmental issues and is called 'Green January' in their work. Every Friday during Green January, a vegan meal was offered at lunchtime, courtesy of Teddi, who is the chair of the environmental committee, introducing young people to a vegan diet as an option. The work of Hamrinn for young refugees is considered exemplary by Landvernd and is in the spirit of global justice. An environmental charter has also been adopted by the board of Hamrinn, and it is on display for all to see on the walls of Hamrinn.

The young people themselves are the driving force behind the work.

Hamarinn is a youth centre for young people aged 16-25 in the old tax office at Suðurgata 14. It operates on the values of equality, friendship and well-being, and respect for nature and the environment is an underlying principle in all its activities. The internal operations are based on the principle that the young people themselves are the driving force behind the work, and as such, the activities and projects of the centre reflect the zeitgeist and the interests of the young people themselves.
