Implementation of the new waste sorting system is complete.
The distribution of new rubbish bins in Hafnarfjörður is complete in all 8 refuse collection districts of the town. All residents who pay the refuse collection fee should have received a new bin. Detached properties (single, semi-detached and terraced houses) received a 240L two-chambered bin for food waste and mixed waste, while blocks of flats received a 240L bin for food waste. Older bins have been re-labelled, so everyone should now have a bin for the four-stream waste collection: food waste, mixed waste, plastic and paper. All households were also given a plastic caddy and a set of paper bags for sorting food waste in the kitchen.
The last new rubbish bin was presented this week to Hafnarfjörður resident Skarphéðinn Orri Björnsson, a councillor and CEO of the biotechnology company Algalíf, at his home in Hafnarfjörður when the implementation team completed the distribution of new rubbish bins in the last street in Völlunum.
A strong implementation team has, over the last 10 weeks, assembled around 6,500 containers and distributed them to approximately 10,500 households across 8 refuse collection districts in the City of Hafnarfjörður, along with plastic baskets and paper bag sets. Nearly 16,000 re-labellings of older rubbish bins have also been carried out alongside the distribution.
If residents believe that something has been missed in the distribution, they are encouraged to send an email to the following address: sorpflokkun@hafnarfjordur.is and let us know. The town's staff try to respond quickly and effectively.
