Uncertainty level due to an earthquake swarm on the Reykjanes Peninsula

The National Commissioner of Police, in consultation with the Police Commissioner of South-West Iceland, has declared a state of alert for the Civil Protection Authority due to a series of earthquakes on the Reykjanes Peninsula.. An earthquake swarm began on the evening of 4th July and is still ongoing.

Residents urged to consider loose items

Residents in the south-western part of the country are urged to secure loose and indoor items that could fall during an earthquake, and to take particular care to ensure that loose items cannot fall on people while they are sleeping. The Icelandic Meteorological Institute has also warned that rockfalls and landslides could occur on steep ground, so it is advisable to exercise caution on steep slopes. A civil contingency alert level means that an event is being closely monitored, which could later lead to a threat to the health and safety of the public, the environment or built-up areas. Declaring an alert level is part of the procedures within the Civil Contingencies system to ensure formal communication and information-sharing between responders. During an alert level, responders and organisations review their plans and preparedness.
