Remember the Way – a dementia awareness campaign
World Alzheimer's Day is on 21 September each year, and the day is used to raise awareness of the neurodegenerative disease. As part of the Alzheimer's Association's 'Remember the Journey' awareness campaign, a purple bench has been installed on Herjólfsgata in Hafnarfjörður, among other places. The benches feature a QR code which can be scanned to simultaneously support the association.
Let's be mindful and help those who forget to lead a fulfilling life.

A purple bench by the seaside to encourage open discussion about dementia
Purple is the international colour for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Purple benches have been placed in several locations in the capital region; on Herjólfsgata in Hafnarfjörður opposite the Hafnarfjörður Swimming Pool, at Kársnes, by Grótta, at Reykjavík Airport and on the footbridge at the end of Fossvogur, and by Sjaland. All the benches have the common feature of being situated by the sea with a beautiful view, but together they also form a pleasant route through five municipalities in the capital region.
Hafnarfjörður is a supporting municipality
Hafnarfjörður is a supportive community and has, in cooperation The Alzheimer's Society Working towards the implementation of a society that is friendly, supportive and aware of the needs of people with dementia and their carers. The Alzheimer's Association is based at the St. Jó Wellbeing Centre in Hafnarfjörður, where it welcomes clients and their carers for advice and education.
