Hvaleyrarskóli in an international chess competition

News

At the beginning of the month, the Hvaleyrarskóli chess team took part in their first international competition. They are next heading to the Nordic Championship.

In an international competition

The Hvaleyrarskóli team competed in the World Schools Championship at the beginning of the month. The competition took place in Washington D.C. in the United States. This was their first international competition, but not their last, as they are aiming for the Nordic Championship in Helsinki in the middle of the month.

„I am very proud of a great group,“ says Kristinn Guðlaugsson, head teacher of Hvaleyrarskóli.

Before the competition, the team was ranked 46th strongest in the tournament, and they finished in 45th place. They had received training from the president of the Chess Federation before the trip. India won the tournament quite convincingly, with Kazakhstan in second place and the United States in third.

The team consists of:

  • Emilia Clara Tomasdottir
  • Katrín Ósk Tómasdóttir
  • Kristófer Árni Egilsson
  • Milosz Úlfur Olszewski
  • Tristan Nash, Alguno, Openia

A great passion for chess has taken root at Hvaleyrarskóli, as in many schools in the town of Hafnarfjörður.

„There's a chessboard in the corridor here and students are playing chess. Chess has been revived here at the school. Three or four years ago, we took it up again after a quiet period and we were ahead of the chess boom,“ explains Kristinn.

„Yes, they did well out there and jumped up one place in their debut in a foreign competition. This is a great experience for them all,“ says Kristinn.

A huge congratulations on the experience, and the very best of luck at the Nordic Championships.
