All children born in May 2023 and earlier have received an offer of a nursery place in the nurseries of the City of Hafnarfjörður this autumn. Children of the required age who move to Hafnarfjörður this autumn or winter will also receive an offer, subject to availability. Enrolment in Hafnarfjörður's nurseries has gone well and the situation is good. Therefore, all children aged 15 months and over have received an offer of a nursery place for the new school year.

Changed nursery day

The City of Hafnarfjörður is introducing changes to the children's nursery day this autumn. This offers the opportunity for the children to have a shorter stay, while still receiving the same care and teaching. Parents can reduce their nursery fees by up to 30%. However, as before, parents can still secure a full-time nursery place for their children if they need to. The changes will take effect on 1 September in all nursery schools in the City of Hafnarfjörður. The nursery day will be defined in terms of hours within each day and within the school year, and the nursery calendar will average 180 days a year, similar to the primary school calendar. Other days will be so-called registration days, and parents will register their children on those days, that is, during the winter holiday, Christmas holiday, Lent and partly during the summer.

A better workplace and more family-friendly

The changes are expected to benefit families and help the local authority to retain skilled professionals and attract more qualified staff. With a structured day at nursery, it is even more likely that the professional staff will be better utilised with the children.

  • Shorter stays for children have a positive effect on the school day and reduce the pressure on the children in each group. Structured activities take place from 9 am to 3 pm. Free play takes place from 7:30 am to 9 am and after 3 pm.
  • A reduction in nursery fees has a direct impact on households, and the financial benefit of reducing children's hours from a 40-hour to a 30-hour week saves approximately 30% on nursery fees. Furthermore, the family gains additional time together.
  • Parents will have the opportunity to register the hours they need and that suit their family; flexible hours will be offered. Until now, parents have not been able to purchase the hours they want, but this will now be possible, thereby reducing their expenses.

The City of Hafnarfjörður is accepting applications for jobs at its nurseries and is currently looking for, among others, occupational therapists, special teachers and a special education director. Here See if you are being searched for.

The changes have been named the Hafnarfjörður route.. The town is proud to be able to offer an even better working environment and structure for families in its nurseries.
