650 young people from Hafnarfjörður, aged 14 to 16, are currently carrying out important clean-up work across the town. The emphasis these days is on the town centre, with the aim of having it neat and tidy for the national day itself.

The Hafnarfjörður Work Camp began operations at the beginning of June, and around 650 young people from Hafnarfjörður, aged 14 to 16, are now at work across the town. The daily tasks for the groups are varied and changeable. The emphasis these days is on the town centre, with the aim of keeping it neat and tidy for the national day itself. The town has been decorated with flowers and the pavements and paths swept. Work-school staff are carrying out important cleaning tasks through to August.

Emphasis on environmental issues and leisure activities

The Hafnarfjörður Work Camp primarily focuses on environmental issues, thus playing a major role in cleaning the town and maintaining the vegetation, streets and footpaths over the summer. The staff of the work school play an important role in creating the town's desirable appearance, ensuring it is clean and tidy for residents and the increasing number of tourists who visit. A large group also works at the town's play schemes and sports clubs, where they learn to work with a group of younger children, providing them with guidance and advice. Such work is rewarding and formative for the future. The work experience programme runs from June to August, with an emphasis on a variety of jobs and ensuring that all work parties get to tackle a range of different tasks.
