The Winter Festival has begun in Hafnarfjörður.

The Winter Festival will be held from 1st to 4th February for the 17th time, and the festival will take place in all six municipalities of the capital region. This festival of light and darkness consists of four main pillars: Museum Night, Swimming Pool Night, Snow Celebration and Light Art, along with over 150 free events where a multitude of artists take part in creating a unique atmosphere in the city.

Around twenty buildings in the capital region will be illuminated in the signature colours of the Winter Lights Festival, green and purple, in addition to which light art installations will be on several key buildings in the capital region; Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, Reykjavík City Hall, Kópavogskirkja and Hafnarborg, where the old dream, a video work by Ráðhildur Ingadóttir, will be projected onto the gable so that visitors and people nearby can enjoy it.

In Hafnarfjörður, key buildings will be illuminated: the Library, the Folk Museum and Hafnarborg on Museum Night, and Ásvallalaug on Pool Night. Never before have so many taken part in this interplay of light and darkness.

 

Museum Night on Friday, 2nd February

Museum Night will be held on Friday evening, 2 February 2018, when fifty museums will open their doors and offer a fun and varied programme from 18:00 to 23:00. The emphasis will be on offering unconventional events this evening and giving visitors a new perspective on the museums. Residents and visitors of the city of all ages can enjoy Museum Night free of charge late into the evening.

There is free transport on a special Museum Night bus service between all the museums.

On Museum Night, the Museum Night Game takes place. You can take part in the game by answering easy questions and collecting stamps from the different museums you visit. The entry form and the game's question can be collected from all museums taking part in Museum Night. The entry form should be returned to the designated boxes in the museums, and you could win a fantastic prize. The draw for the Museum Night Game will take place on 15 February.

 

Swimming Pool Night on Saturday, 3rd February

Swim Night will be held on Saturday evening, 3rd February 2018, when swimming will be free from 18:00 to 22:00 in nine swimming pools in the capital region. Events at the pools will be of various kinds, and guests will get to experience a unique and unusual evening in the amazing darkness. Light, darkness and joy will be all-pervading, with guests being encouraged to take part by dancing, singing or simply relaxing and enjoying the moment.

Snow Festival Sunday, 4th February

Children under 16 get in for free to the Snow Festival in Bláfjöll.

 

The main purpose of the Winter Festival is to entertain people in the capital region and give them the opportunity to enjoy culture, the arts, sports and the outdoors in their own municipality and/or visit their neighbours in a nearby municipality. Orkusalan is the main sponsor of the Winter Festival this year, and the festival is produced in collaboration with Hljóð X.
