Cross-country ski trails laid in Hafnarfjörður
The weather looks good for being outdoors these days, and the City of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with the Keili Golf Club and other good partners, has laid out three cross-country skiing trails. A pilot project is underway with a cross-country ski trail at Víðistaðatún, and two cross-country ski trails have also been laid out at Hvaleyrarvöllur. One is short and easy, and the other is longer and more hilly, running west from the clubhouse towards the course commonly known as Hraunið.
Come and try cross-country skiing in your local area!
The weather is good for winter sports these days, and now the Keilir Golf Club, in collaboration with the City of Hafnarfjörður, has laid out two cross-country ski trails at Hvaleyrarvöllur. One of the tracks is about 1 km long, starting below the clubhouse and running around Hvaleyrarvellir. The other track is about 2 km long, starting at the car park by Hraunkot and crossing the course commonly known as Hraunið. The tracks are therefore of varying lengths and difficulties and should suit most people. The start of the trails is marked with euro pallets for the time being, which should be easy to see, and a map is forthcoming. It is planned that the Keilir Golf Club will maintain the trails laid out on the golf course for as long as snow and frost remain, and the course staff welcome any constructive feedback.
Ideal sport for the whole family
Cross-country skiing has enjoyed ever-increasing popularity in recent years, and the residents of Hafnarfjörður and friends of the town are undoubtedly among its most active practitioners. This is the ideal sport for the whole family, combining time together, the great outdoors, exercise and a whole lot of fresh air. The Healthy City of Hafnarfjörður hopes that the people of Hafnarfjörður will make use of these new trails, take every precaution, and enjoy skiing through the lava fields. If all goes well, it will be considered whether cross-country ski trails can be created in other areas, such as at Víðistaðatún, which is not only well-attended during the summer but is also popular in winter for winter sports. Many have enjoyed sledging on Víðistaðatún, which is also popular with a growing group of snowboarders.
