Hafnarfjörður lowers its tariffs

News

The Hafnarfjörður Town Council decided at its meeting this week to propose that the town's general tariffs be reviewed and not increase by more than 3%. The change will take effect from 1 May and is in line with statements made by the local authorities in Hafnarfjörður since autumn 2023 regarding a review of fee increases for 2024, should the outcome of the wage negotiations provide cause for it.

3% increase in the tariff rate, up from 9.9% in 2024

The Hafnarfjörður Town Council decided at its meeting this week to propose that the town's general tariffs be reviewed and not increase by more than 3%. The change will take effect from 1 May and is in line with statements made by the local authorities in Hafnarfjörður since autumn 2023 regarding a review of fee increases for 2024, should the outcome of the collective bargaining agreements provide cause. In this way, the municipality wishes to send a clear message and contribute to interest rates and inflation expectations.

„Hafnarfjörður is contributing to the achievement of a national agreement on long-term collective bargaining agreements by reviewing its tariff schedule, as the municipality announced last autumn.“ says Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður. „We welcome the collective bargaining agreements that have been reached and emphasise that through a joint effort, interest rates and inflation can be brought down. This is of great benefit to families, businesses and others.“

The change takes effect from 1 May.

The change is expected to take effect from 1 May, subject to the condition that agreements with local government employees are in line with those already signed on the general labour market. If the changes come into effect, the council's revenue will be reduced by almost 36 million krónur from what is forecast in the 2024 budget. An addendum to the budget will be drawn up for these changes, which will be presented to the council's executive committee.
