Mayor inspects the works at the Fjörukráin

News

Mayor Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir inspected the extensive hotel development currently taking place at Fjörukrána. Rósa has been travelling widely this autumn and aims to meet with a diverse range of businesses across all sectors of the economy to hear about their challenges and opportunities.

The Viking village is expanding with a new hotel building.

Preparations at the Viking Village were in full swing for the evening, when sisters Birna and Unnur Viðarsdætur, the managers, welcomed Mayor Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir on a windy winter's morning recently.

Business is booming, even in winter, with high hotel occupancy, as the village and the Fjörukrá have a unique appeal. There, every touch has been crafted with care, making the place an experience at every step.

The hotel will be four-star.

Hotel Víking and Fjörukráin are at Víkingastræti 1-3 and are characteristic of the town. The service is personal as it is a family-run business. Fjörukráin has been run by the father of Birna and Unnar, Jóhannes Viðar Bjarnason, since 10 May 1990. It is nationally renowned for its Viking feasts and Viking Village, which was ranked 7th among the most searched-for tourist attractions online in the Capital Region last year, so-called magnets according to the Marketing Office of the Capital Region. The sisters have now taken over the reins.

Birna and Unnur led the mayor around the Fjörukráin, telling the story and also about the major development currently underway. A new four-star hotel is rising at the back, where an additional 55 rooms are planned on top of the 54 currently available. The style will be Viking-inspired, with the design by Brynhildur Sólveigardóttir. Water plays a major role in the experience. Seeing it is believing.

The older hotel will be renovated in the style of the old one following the new one's opening, but the foundations are currently being laid. Birna expects the hotel to open in January 2026. The breakfast room will move there, and more rooms will be added to the existing building.

The Christmas season is just around the corner.

However, the Fjöru-krá is better known than the hotel operation at the Viking Village. Preparations for Christmas are now underway, and a Christmas buffet will be served there every Friday and Saturday from 15th November. It is clear that this family-run business is going from strength to strength.

The mayor has visited businesses this autumn. There are good conditions for businesses to grow and develop in Hafnarfjörður. Many have indeed established and moved their operations to the municipality in recent months and years.

„We Hafnfirðingar are proud of this gem on Strandgatan, which brings the town's life to life and characterises it. We look forward to seeing the new hotel rise, but it is important to increase the number of hotel rooms in the town centre; they will boost activity and enhance the social life,“ says Rósa. „It's important for me as mayor to meet with business owners and hear directly how we, as a town, can best support different types of businesses.“

Yes, it will be really fun to see the Viking village grow.
