The City of Hafnarfjörður has recently entered into agreements with landowners for the development of nearly 600 homes near the south harbour of Hafnarfjörður, on Hvaleyrarbraut and Óseyrarbraut.

Major development at the harbour of Hafnarfjörður

Today, contracts were signed for the development of 148 flats at Hvaleyrarbraut 4-12 and 110 flats with a service area at Hvaleyrarbraut 20. An agreement was recently finalised for the development of 190 flats at Óseyrarbraut 13. It was also reported this summer that 144 flats will be built at Hvaleyrarbraut 26-30, along with service spaces.

In total, agreements have therefore been reached for the development of 592 homes in the area. Further development of homes and services is planned for this area in the coming years, and this will have a significant and positive impact on the town's appearance and its community life.

Desirable for residents and visitors

„We believe that with the diversification of its settlement, Hafnarfjörður will become even more attractive to both residents and visitors. It is important to offer a diverse range of housing options in the town, and it will undoubtedly be highly sought-after to live close to the sea and the harbour in the beautiful fjord,“ says Mayor Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir.

The residential areas in question are bordered by Hvaleyrarbraut, Lónsbraut and Óseyrarbraut to the south of the harbour area, including the so-called Óseyrarhverfi. The plots have, until now, been used for various types of commercial activity. Many of the existing buildings are now ageing and have served their purpose.

Adapted and better use

„The use of the area has simply changed over the years, and it is therefore important to make better use of this beautiful area,“ says Rósa.

The proposed development at the Port of Hafnarfjörður supports the new regional plan for the capital region, Capital Region 2040, which emphasises urban densification and local services.

„The harbour area is a very exciting option and a key area in the town for urban densification. It is a step forward to move away from the practice of using coastal land in urban areas exclusively for commercial purposes, as was previously the case, and to give the town's residents the opportunity to live in areas with magnificent views.“
