Guests of Lækj set up an art exhibition in the Innovation Centre

News

Guests of Lækjar have taken advantage of the excellent facilities at the Hafnarfjörður Innovation Centre this summer to paint, draw and create. This weekly session has been a great success, and there are plans to continue the workshop in the autumn. The summer has been exceptionally enjoyable, and a quality exhibition will be held for the guests of Lækjar to celebrate the summer's work on 30th July, but on this occasion, it will be open only to the guests of Lækjar.

Art exhibition for guests of Lækjar

„Guests of Lækjar have been coming to us once a week this summer to paint, draw and create in the Experiment Workshop. This weekly session has been a great success and we plan to continue it in the autumn. The summer has been so much fun and an exhibition will be held for Lækur's guests on 30th July at the Innovation Centre, to celebrate the summer's work.“ says Þorbjörg Signý Ágústsson, who works at the Innovation Centre of Hafnarfjörður.

Utilise the facilities of the Innovation Centre by the Stream for artistic creation

„The project is a collaboration between the two institutions, which allows guests of the Læk refuge to come and use the facilities of the Innovation Centre once a week. So far, the theme has been art creation, but guests are offered the chance to draw and paint in a beautiful and safe environment. The guests always bring great joy, and the artworks from this summer are varied and beautiful,“ says Thorbjorg.

Policy: Exhibition to open to all before Christmas

The group has been excited to come, and participation has been high, as the staff of the Innovation Centre are extremely pleased with this fun group.

„We look forward to welcoming them and hope to be able to continue such activities, as well as to host more groups like this. The exhibition will be on the more relaxed side and, for this time, will only be open to guests of Lækur, but it looks as though the group will be staying on for the autumn. Then I'd like to hold another exhibition that's open to the public before Christmas!“ says Thorbjorg.

Everyone gets a chance to enjoy some quality time together.

Lækur is a haven for individuals with mental health issues. The haven is located at Staðarberg 6, and the facilities are most splendid. One of Lækjar's main roles is to provide a safe and welcoming space for people aiming to reduce social isolation, encourage interaction with others, and strengthen their mental and physical health, where everyone can enjoy themselves. Brynja Rut Vilhjálmsdóttir is the manager of Lækjar. Between eight and fifteen people attend daily, and around 1,500 people a year.

Recreation and education on a peer-to-peer basis

Lækur is not a conventional treatment centre or institution, but rather a setting where the emphasis is on creating a homely atmosphere on an equal footing. A variety of recreational and educational activities are offered as part of the drop-in centre's daily programme, with a focus on movement, relaxation, communication, socialising and games. Visitors themselves have a great influence on shaping the programme, and as such, courses have been offered in soap-making, cosmetics-making, fudge-making, cookery, jewellery-making, art, and pottery.
