The event took place at the sports hall on Strandgata today.

The year 2025 was a big year for the athletes of the Borough of Hafnarfjörður, as in total they received 507 individuals, players and coaches, the Icelandic championship titles this year. We wish youCongratulations on your success. At the ceremony, 10.8 million was allocated from a fund established by Rio Tinto in Iceland, ÍBH and the City of Hafnarfjörður, which is intended to support sports activities for under-18s.  Following the delivery, a total of 24 million krónur has therefore been handed over for this project in 2025.

FH women's football team is the team of the year.

FH women's first team football is the 2025 Team of the Year. The team achieved excellent results last year. The team reached the final of the Women's Mjólkurbikar for the first time in the club's history, where they were defeated 3-2 by Breiðablik after a thrilling match. In the Icelandic league, the team played 23 matches, with 15 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses. and as previously mentioned, they secured second place in the women's top division, and also qualified for next year's European competition.

The FH team was one of the youngest in the Women's Premier League in 2025, as the club's policy is to be a platform for the development of young, home-grown players. This was particularly evident in the summer, where the squad featured a blend of young, promising players alongside their more senior and experienced counterparts.

It is clear that the team's success this summer has shown that the FH women's first team has become one of the best teams in the country in Icelandic women's football. The team's play attracted attention for its high intensity and entertaining attacking play.

Individual players from the team also attracted attention, and an FH player, Thelma Karen Pálmadóttir, was named the most promising player of the Icelandic Championship. In addition, three players (Thelma Karen, Elísa Sigurjónsdóttir and Arna Eiríksdóttir), two of whom were home-grown, were sold to professional clubs during the year, marking the first time the club has managed to sell players from its women's team abroad.

Thóra Kristín Jónsdóttir is the athlete of Hafnarfjörður 2025

Basketball player Þóra Kristín led the Haukar team to the league and national championship titles this year, and is also a key player for the Icelandic national team, where she is captain alongside Sara Rún Hinriksdóttir. This year, Þóra was named Player of the Year in the women's top division, as well as the Finals MVP as Haukar clinched the title. However, it is extremely rare for the same player to be named both the regular season's best player and the Finals MVP.

Leo Anthony Speight is the Hafnarfjörður Sportsman of 2025

For many years, Leo Anthony has been our most formidable Taekwondo fighter and has been voted Taekwondo Fighter of Iceland five times. He was selected to represent Iceland at the World Championships in China this year, is the reigning Icelandic champion, and is a multiple-time Nordic champion. He is a regular on the Icelandic national combat team and had podium finishes in 5 competitions in 2025, until an injury occurred in the autumn. Leo was selected for the Icelandic team that receives funding from the Olympic Solidarity Fund in the run-up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and is part of the ISI Olympic squad.

Aron Pálmarsson was given special recognition.

Aron Pálmarsson was honoured in a special way at the awards ceremony. Aron put his handball school on hold at the end of last season.

„It is safe to say that Aron is one of the most successful athletes that Hafnarfjörður and Iceland have ever produced, but it is not only his achievements on the pitch that have attracted attention; he has also proven himself to be an outstanding role model for our young people, and indeed for all of us,“ said Tryggvi Rafnsson, the event's presenter. „The Sports and Leisure Committee would therefore like to take this opportunity to honour Aron for his contribution.“

It was noted that during his career, Aron won no fewer than 34 major titles, 32 of which were on the international stage. Aron has, among other things, become a national champion a total of 13 times in four countries, has won the European Champions League three times and has become a club world champion three times. „Aron also took part in the European Champions League final weekend 10 times, more than any other handball player in history. Aron won a bronze medal with the Icelandic national team at the 2010 European Championship and played 182 international matches for Iceland, scoring 692 goals for his country.“

  • Aron started playing handball at a young age with FH and played his first games for the club's first team at just 15 years old. In 2009, when Aron was 19 years old, he joined the German giants THW Kiel and played for them for six years, until 2015, when he moved to Veszprém in Hungary. From there, he moved to Spanish superpower Barcelona for four years, and then to Aalborg in Denmark for two years, before returning home to FH in the summer of 2023. With FH, Aron became both a league and Icelandic champion in 2024 and was named both the Most Valuable Player of the season and the Best Player of the Final Four. In the autumn of 2024, Aron unexpectedly re-signed with Veszprém in Hungary, playing his final season with the team and ending his career as a Hungarian champion.

As you can hear, Aron has won numerous titles during his career, and in addition to these, he has received several personal awards. Notably, he has twice been named the best player in the European Champions League and has been selected as the Icelandic Handballer of the Year four times. He was also named Sportsman of the Year here in 2012. FH has also honoured its man, awarding him the FH Gold Medal in 2010 and the title of FH Sportsman in 2024.

Hafnarfjörður warmly congratulates all of Hafnarfjörður's athletes on the achievement of the year 2025.!
