Pioneering work at the Læk shelter
An art studio will be set up in a 70-square-metre space at Læk, a safe haven for individuals with mental health issues. The property's double garage, which was previously used as storage for other activities, will now also become part of Lækur. Brynja Rut Vilhjálmsdóttir, director of Lækur, says there is great anticipation at being able to offer an even more robust service.
The smell of pancakes filled the shelter 'Lækurinn' at Staðarberg 6 when the mayor paid a visit earlier on Friday. The mood was light-hearted, as the group had just finished tucking into their Þorramatur. It was Bóndadagur, and the men were sporting ties.
Mayor Valdimar Víðisson says it speaks for itself when the smell of pancakes meets you at the door. „The atmosphere is like at a good, cosy home party. This warmth is no coincidence; it's part of what makes Læk such a great place. Everyone here experiences a sense of safety, togetherness and a great opportunity to enjoy themselves. I very much welcome the expansion of the space and the creation of art studios to further enhance the work.“
The activity, which is visited 3,580 times a year, is extremely important for many who attend, as the main purpose of the drop-in centre is to provide a safe and welcoming space for people, with the aim of reducing social isolation, encouraging interaction with others, and strengthening mental and physical health, where everyone can enjoy themselves.
The mayor chatted with the people, and various connections came to light. It was a very good time, just like the programme in the house.
Breakfast, stretching, knitting and crafts, lunch and free time on Mondays, spinning fun on Tuesdays, walking, art and creativity on Tuesdays. Cooking and a cultural trip on Wednesdays, book club on Thursdays, discussion and photography. Then there's tai chi on the Thursday programme and Friday Fun on Fridays with pancakes, just like this Midsummer's Friday.
At Læk, breakfast, lunch and coffee are available for a small charge. The premises also have laundry and shower facilities.
Don't hesitate to find out about the work and get involved.
