A cost-effective construction solution that bodes well

In early December, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður invited tenders for the design and construction of a six-class nursery school at Áshamar 9 in the Hamranes district of Hafnarfjörður, totalling approximately 1,200 m². This was a competitive tender, and bidders were asked to submit design proposals for the new nursery premises. Seven tenders were received, and at its meeting in January, the Environment and Operations Committee of Hafnarfjörður accepted the tender from Þarfaþing hf., which had bid kr. 877,544,044 for the project. The client's cost estimate was 984,000,000.- Construction of the nursery has begun, characterised by cost-effectiveness and new solutions and methods.

Agreement between the City of Hafnarfjörður and Þarfaþing signed

„The number of nursery school children is increasing significantly in Hamranes at present, as a great deal of housing development has taken place there in recent months. It was decided to explore new approaches to building a nursery in the neighbourhood that would both shorten the construction time and be more cost-effective than traditional methods. This project is promising and we look forward to the new nursery opening to welcome the youngest residents of Hamranes.“ says Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, mayor of Hafnarfjörður. In addition, the neighbourhood is set to include two parallel primary schools and a four-unit nursery, as well as a care home, and preparations for both are well under way.

Completion scheduled for February 2025

Þarfaþing has already begun the development and will build and complete the premises, excluding the plot and car park, and hand it over ready for use. Ideas for the layout, solutions and choice of materials carried significant weight in the evaluation of tenders, and the nursery school is to be designed in accordance with the concept of universal design. This involves designing good solutions with the equality and well-being of all people as a priority. The nursery will be constructed using Modules timber units, which are assembled in a factory under optimal conditions. The units are transported fully equipped with walls, flooring and a roof to the site and arranged together in accordance with the drawings. The nursery will be single-storey, L-shaped, centred around a central area which will house the activities and provide shelter for the playground. The concept from the needs assessment is considered stylish, the home areas are bright, colourful and inviting, the access routes are clear and there is a good connection between all areas. The units are scheduled to be transported to the site this summer, and preparations and work on the foundation are in full swing.

Groundworks and site design also well advanced

The groundworks for the car park and building are complete, with Gröfa og Grjót having submitted the lowest bid for this package. The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður has also recently entered into a contract with the company Landslag following a tender process, for the design of the grounds and car park for a new nursery school. The design of the site is in its final stages and, upon its completion, the work will be put out to tender. The nursery's site is scheduled to be ready for its opening in February 2025.
