Youth Club and Youth Centre Week 2024 is about to begin. Parents, guardians, siblings and anyone else interested are encouraged to find out about the activities at the youth clubs and youth centres in Hafnarfjörður and to encourage their children and young people to take an active part. The week runs from 14th to 18th October, and many youth clubs will be holding open houses, waffle cafés, and inviting visits.

Participation in organised leisure activities is an important preventative measure.

The week aims to promote and highlight the important work that takes place in community centres and youth clubs for children and young people. It is proven that participation in organised sports and leisure activities is crucial for the future of children and young people and has been considered one of the greatest protective factors in their lives. Children and young people who take part in organised activities are less likely than others to use alcohol, tobacco and drugs. It does not matter whether it is sports, dance, music, scouting or youth club activities. Just active participation in organised leisure activities. The City of Hafnarfjörður is proud of the vibrant work that takes place in the city's youth clubs and youth centres.

Youth centres in all neighbourhoods, serving all primary schools.

A youth club operates in all neighbourhoods, alongside all nine of the municipality's primary schools. HHH – Queer Get-togethers in Hafnarfjörður is the latest addition, with events held every Thursday at the youth club at Víðistaðaskóli. The leisure clubs Kletturinn and Vinaskjól, at Húsinu, Suðurgata 14, offer a wide range of leisure activities for children and young people with disabilities. The role of the youth clubs is to offer children and young people aged 10-16 recreational activities with their peers in a safe environment that has preventative, educational and developmental value, and is tailored to their age and maturity. Emphasis is placed on active participation and hands-on involvement in the activities. The work of the youth clubs is varied, and the programme is developed with the young people themselves. The youth clubs also organise larger events such as a primary school festival, a singing competition, a school skate, Hafnarfjarðarstíll, and the quiz competition 'Do You Know the Answer?', to name but a few. They also take part in larger national events such as the Samfés Song Contest, Samfestinginn and Rímnaflæði.

An encouragement to find a suitable hobby and interest.

The staff of the youth centres try to encourage children and young people to listen for, find and develop their strengths and areas of interest, as there is a greater chance that an individual will flourish when they find a hobby and a pastime that suits them. One of the things youth clubs take great pride in is the participation of young people, and they are, as far as possible, included in decision-making and encouraged to participate democratically. The week is an annual event, held nationwide, and is organised by Samfés, the association of youth clubs and youth centres in Iceland.
