Proposal to change nursery admission rules
According to the council's admissions policy, all children are offered a place at nursery school in the year they turn two. Younger children are also admitted if they meet the criteria for priority.
At the Education Committee meeting this morning, the situation regarding enrolment in the town's nurseries was discussed.
In light of recent discussion and enquiries regarding the enrolment rules and age requirements for children at the town's nursery school, the City of Hafnarfjörður would like to make the following statement:
According to the council's admissions policy, all children are offered a place at nursery in the year they turn two. Younger children can also be admitted if they meet the priority criteria. Subsidies for children in childcare at home increase in the month the child turns two. After that, parents pay the closest amount to the standard nursery fee for the place.
Working groups are currently at work, one on the review of the City of Hafnarfjörður's education policy and the other on changes to the municipality's fee schedule. The groups' first proposals are expected to be published in May. Among other things, ways are being sought to change the nursery school admission rules with the aim of taking the first steps towards lowering the admission age for children at the town's nurseries and ensuring the rules are transparent and clear.
It is important that decisions on such costly changes are made after the operational review currently underway of the council's institutions has been completed, and that the council is united in its commitment to strengthening the nursery school sector and services for families with children as resources become available.
