Improved kerbside collection system – Increased sorting and larger bins
The service for kerbside recycling bins in Hafnarfjörður is being put out to tender, with the aim of a new and improved system taking effect in February 2016.
The service for kerbside bins in Hafnarfjörður is out to tender, and it is planned that a new and improved system will be in place in February 2016. Changes to the collection bins will take effect from 1 September, and there may be some disruption to the service while the bins are being replaced.
A new kerbside collection system, which will be introduced in February, will feature larger bins and expanded sorting options, with glass containers being added at some kerbside collection points. At the largest neighbourhood stations, it will therefore be possible to recycle paper, plastic packaging, glass packaging, clothes and textiles, cans and bottles.
Clothes bins are run by the Icelandic Red Cross and tin collection is handled by the Scouts, but these bins are not at all collection points.
The collection of glass packaging at local collection points is part of efforts to increase recycling in the capital region, as SORPA aims to achieve a waste recycling rate of over 95% for household waste in the area in the coming years.
