Candles, hugs, peace and memories
Joy, anticipation, peace, memories and reunions are concepts that apply to a typical Icelandic Christmas, writes Arnór Bjarki Blomsterberg, vicar of Ástjarnarkirkja, and reminds us not to forget what truly delights the soul and warms the heart at Christmas.
„Christmas is candlelight and cuddles,“ wrote Bragi Valdimar in a lovely Christmas text describing what Christmas is like for most of us.
Joy, anticipation, peace, memories and reunions are concepts that apply to a typical Icelandic Christmas. But not all of us are so lucky as to have a typical Icelandic Christmas. Some experience loss and grief, some experience violence and fear, some experience isolation and loneliness. These feelings are never more palpable than at Christmas, when everyone is supposed to be happy. I want to encourage you, dear reader, to pause in your busy schedule, look up from your shopping lists and the mop, and notice the people in your life. Could it be that there are people around you who need time, presence and love?
During Advent, it is important not to forget what truly brings joy to souls and warms hearts. Empathy and compassion can have a profound effect on the people we meet. Empathy can create a connection that lasts long after the Christmas lights have been switched off. Warmth and support at the times our loved ones need it are more precious than any wrapped Christmas present, for both the giver and the receiver. Enjoy the Christmas – Together.“

Noah's Advice
- Let's show gratitude. Being aware of our own blessings makes it easier for us to show empathy for others. Let's look around us and be thankful for what we have.
- Let's show love – even in challenging interactions. Loving interactions bridge gaps and increase empathy.
- Let's show empathy. Supporting people who are going against the grain can strengthen empathy.
- Let's learn from the experiences of others. Familiarising yourself with different experiences, whether through conversations, books or the news, can broaden your horizons and increase your understanding of the diversity of human life.
- Self-examination. Recognising your own feelings increases your understanding of other people's situations.
