Chess life boosted with a primary school tournament and encouraging gifts

The Kiwanis Club Hraunborg in Hafnarfjörður yesterday hosted a primary school chess tournament for the top chess teams of the 5th to 7th grades from nine local primary schools. The games were played on new chess sets provided by Hraunborg for the tournament, and at the end of the event, the club gave two chess sets as a gift to each of the town's primary schools.

Six chess players played for each school team, and the players and team captains of the three teams with the highest win totals were awarded medals. The most successful chess teams were the teams from Áslandsskóli, Hvaleyrarskóli and Öldutúnsskóli. The tension mounted as the event progressed, and the competition finished with the school teams from Öldutúnsskóli and Hvaleyrarskóli level on 24½ points. The tie was then decided by the internal tie-break, and the Öldutúnsskóli team emerged as the winner. The winning team from Öldutúnsskóli received a magnificent trophy, which will be a travelling trophy to be kept at their school until the next primary school tournament, which is planned to be held annually. With the primary school chess tournament, the board of the Kiwanis Club of Hraunborgar aims to promote and strengthen chess life in Hafnarfjörður, particularly within the primary schools. The motto of the Kiwanis movement in this country is Children first and foremost and the Lava City in Hafnarfjörður has endeavoured to uphold these words in its projects and initiatives, and has in particular been concerned with the welfare and well-being of the town's children and young people.

Children's chess for beginners starts again in Hafnarfjörður 

Haukar Chess Club After some thought and encouragement from the health-promoting town of Hafnarfjörður, it has decided to restart its chess activities for children after a short break. The target group is beginners in chess of primary school age, and participation will be free to start with.
