Clean-up campaign from 7th to 18th April: „Great Fjord“

News

Pickers welcome, with a barbecue, refreshments and free swimming for everyone who helps out. Street cleaning is in full swing, the Environmental Watch is getting underway, and we are working with businesses to clean up the local area.

The week after Easter, the City of Hafnarfjörður is launching a city-wide clean-up initiative, encouraging residents to take part in a spring clean organised at the grounds of the primary schools and swimming venues in the town.  Companies will also be working to clean up their surroundings, and containers will be placed in three locations in Hafnarfjörður. The containers are intended primarily for the disposal of timber and iron from businesses in each respective area. A staff clean-up day will be held on 18 April, when council staff will be cleaning up the area around the Town Hall and other public buildings. Street cleaning has already begun and is in full swing across the town, and garden waste will be collected in early May.

PICK, PULL, GRILL, HAVE FUN AND SWIM.

„Great Fjord“ is the name of the initiative which will be launched on Saturday, 7th April at Lækjarskóli and Setbergsskóli. A clean-up of the school grounds and surrounding neighbourhoods will take place, and the schedule for the initiative week is as follows:

  • Saturday, 7th April Spring clean at Lækjarskóli and Setbergsskóli from 11:00 to 13:30. The school grounds, the town centre and Setberg will be tidied up, finishing at Suðurbæjarlaug.
  • Tuesday, 10 April The spring clean will take place at the Víðistaðaskóli site on Víðistaðatún and in Engidal. The school grounds will be tidied, with the clean taking place in the north and west of the town from 16:30 to 19:00, finishing at the Swimming Pool.
  • Wednesday, 11th April A spring clean will take place at Áslandssskóli and Hraunvallaskóli. The school grounds, Ásland and Völlarnir will be tidied from 16:30 to 19:00, finishing at Ásvallalaug.
  • Thursday, 12th April A spring clean will take place at Hvaleyrarskóli and Öldutúnsskóli. The school grounds, the Hill and the South Town will be tidied from 16:30 to 19:00, finishing at the South Town Pool.

The latest in running and outdoor activities is so-called „plogging“, which is Swedish in origin, where people get together to walk or jog and pick up litter along the way. This is an ideal opportunity for „ploggers“ to get involved and learn or teach the „plog“. Rubbish bags, litter pickers and bins will be provided, but those interested are asked to dress appropriately for the conditions and bring their own gloves. For environmental reasons, single-use plastic gloves will not be provided. Everyone will be invited for a hot dog after the session, and all participants will then get a free swim and a small treat from the City of Hafnarfjörður.

Hafnarfjörður Municipal Employees' Clean-up Day

The staff of Hafnarfjörður are not to be outdone; their clean-up day will be on 18 April. On that day, staff will clean the areas around their work sites. For several years, for example, staff at the Town Hall have been picking up litter and sweeping Thor's Square and other areas near the Town Hall.

Great role models among businesses in Harbourside

As mentioned above, companies will also be assisted with cleaning up their premises, and containers will be placed in three locations in Hafnarfjörður. The containers are primarily intended for the disposal of timber and iron from businesses in each respective area. Containers will be in the area from the 9th to the 18th of April. Businesses are particularly encouraged to take advantage of this municipal service, thereby helping the town to improve its appearance. The containers will be located as follows

Garden waste will be collected in early May.

As is customary, the council collects residents' garden waste. This collection is organised by neighbourhood and takes place in late May. Residents are asked to place garden waste in bags at the kerbside and to tie up hedge clippings in bundles. Please note that this collection does not include loose soil, timber, metals or hazardous materials.
