10-kilometre Kaldár Run

What's better than discovering history on a run? There are now only two days to go until the Kaldárhlaupið, a 10 km run in memory of Jóhannes J. Reykdal.

This is a fun run from Kaldárseli, above Hafnarfjörður, down to the town centre of Hafnarfjörður. The route is intended to follow the course of the Hamarskot stream from Kaldárbotnar to the sea.

„Then the run finishes at the finish line on Strandgatan. Grýla presents the first prizes for men and women, and then ten prize draws,“ says Steinunn Guðnadóttir, one of the two organisers of the cultural festival Hátíð Hamarskotslækjar, which is behind the run in collaboration with the FH Running Group. Hópbílar, Fjarðarfréttir and the City of Hafnarfjörður are sponsoring the run.

And how does this work? A coach trip for runners from Hafnarfjarðarkirkja to Kaldársel, sponsored by Hópbílum.

  • Meet at 12:00 in the car park at Hafnarfjarðarkirkja.
  • Set off for Kaldársel at 12:30.
  • The run starts from Kaldársel at 13:00.

A free swim for runners at the Suðurbær Pool after the race, sponsored by the City of Hafnarfjörður. It will be possible to register on the spot, but the registration fee will then be 3,000 krónur in cash.

What and why?

Further details. In celebration of the Festival of Hamarskotslækur, the Kaldárhlaup will be held on Sunday, 15th December at 13:00. The race is a 10 km fun run from Kaldárseli, above Hafnarfjörður, down to the town centre of Hafnarfjörður.

The Hamarskot Stream Festival was celebrated for the first time on 12 December 2010 in Hafnarfjörður. It is held in honour of Jóhannes J. Reykdal. A milestone in the nation's history was reached when Hamarskotsker was harnessed and its hydropower used to power woodworking machinery and electrify 16 houses in Hafnarfjörður. The pioneer behind this was Jóhannes J. Reykdal, who in 1904 founded the country's first public electricity supply.

This year marks 150 years since Jóhannes Jóhannesson Reykdal was born (1874) and 120 years since the country's first public electricity supply was established (1904), and the Hamarskot Stream Festival is being held for the 10th time. On 14 December, there will be a lecture and film screening about Jóhannes J. Reykdal and his life at Hafnarborg. The Hamarskotslækjar Festival is a reminder of the importance of the stream and the light.
