In autumn 2014, at the request of the Hafnarfjörður Town Council, Capacent carried out a comparison of options for the location of a care home, considering two options: the Sólvangur site and Skarðshlíð. The conclusion of the analysis was, m.a. that it would be appropriate to further explore a potential partnership with Hrafnista, in line with the existing policy framework for the sector, which provides for three service hubs for older people to be established in Hafnarfjörður for the future; at Sólvang, at Hrafnista and in the Vallahverfi district.

Hrafnista has submitted a proposal to the City of Hafnarfjörður, drawing the city's attention to the possibility of building an extension to Hrafnista and their potential involvement in the construction and operation of a 60-bed care home.

Mayor tasked with opening talks with Hrafnista

The Family Council agreed to instruct the Mayor to enter into exploratory talks with Hrafnista, based on the information in their submission.

The discussions with Hrafnista do not mean that a final decision has been made about the future location of the next care home in the town. Work will continue in line with the existing strategy for the portfolio, with an emphasis on building for the future.

„From 2008 to 2014, 160 million has been allocated to Hafnarfjörður from the elderly people's construction fund, but during the same period, the residents of Hafnarfjörður have paid in the equivalent of 881 million. Since 2004, taxpayers in Hafnarfjörður have paid 1,425,378,327 into the fund, which is equivalent to the construction of a 60-bed care home,“ says Haraldur L. Haraldsson, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður.
