Creative Summer Jobs – Brynja – Visual Arts in Hellisgerði

News

Brynja Valdís Waage, a student on the art course at Fjölbrautaskólinn í Garðabæ, is holding an art exhibition in Hellisgerði on 10 August, organised by the Creative Summer Jobs programme in Hafnarfjörður. On display will be the young artist's interpretation of various well-known landmarks in Hafnarfjörður and the related folklore.

Brynja Valdís Waage, a student on the art course at the Garðabær College of Arts and Sciences, is working on six artworks this summer, drawing inspiration from the nature, landmarks and folklore of Hafnarfjörður.

Reviving creativity

„I've always dreamt of making art of some kind, but in recent years that interest has been fading. I found it hard to find inspiration and didn't want to just do anything, but rather something with a deeper meaning. I believe the solution was to go back to my roots, and what sparked the idea was mythology and folklore. This art series is my way of rekindling my creativity, but also of getting to know Hafnarfjörður better through my inner child,“ says Brynja about the project.

The final results of the summer can be seen at an art exhibition in Hellisgerði on Saturday, 10th August.

We encourage everyone who is interested to come and enjoy the show in the beautiful park!

About Creative Summer Jobs 2024

In the summer of 2021, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with the town's youth centre, Hamarinn, decided to revive the “Creative Summer Jobs” project, which had been run in the summer of 2017. Individuals and groups aged 18-25 were also invited to submit ideas for creative projects in Hafnarfjörður. Selected groups were given the opportunity to work on various creative projects in different artistic fields that would also liven up the town's social life, delighting tourists and residents in one way or another. The staff of Creative Summer Jobs, run as part of the Hafnarfjörður Summer School, are tasked with bringing the town to life, making it more fun, beautiful and diverse with artistic and creative events. The projects are varied and appeal to different age groups and interests. Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir is the project manager for Creative Summer Jobs.

This year, there are seven diverse groups and individuals working as part of the creative summer jobs scheme, and they will be featured weekly over the summer.
