Creative Summer Jobs – Logi – A Ballet Video Work

News

Logi Guðmundsson is an 18-year-old ballet dancer, brought up in the North Town of Hafnarfjörður and has been practising ballet since the age of just eight. The young dancer has now graduated from one of the world's most prestigious ballet schools in San Francisco and is working on an art video project this summer as part of the creative summer jobs scheme in Hafnarfjörður.

Looked abroad

„My name is Logi Guðmundsson and I am an 18-year-old ballet dancer. I grew up in the North Town of Hafnarfjörður, which is a truly wonderful place to live. At the age of eight, I started at the Icelandic School of Choreography, where a great interest and passion for ballet was awakened. I dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer, but to do so, I had to seek my education abroad as no such course is available in Iceland. Ballet is one of the most difficult dance forms to master and requires many years of training, placing great physical demands on the body.“

Emphasises the emotional depth and skill of the ballet dancer

Logi utilised the natural environment of Hafnarfjörður for the work, thus intertwining his talents and expertise with the beautiful surroundings of his hometown. „I have titled my work “Hafnarfjörður, Home Port' and it is a video piece: The work aims to create a video that showcases the artistry and skill of a ballet dancer through a visually captivating medium, filmed at well-known locations in Hafnarfjörður. The video will feature original dance and movements that highlight the emotional depth and skill of the ballet dancer. The work will be designed to resonate with and evoke the audience's feelings for the beauty of the dancer and our beautiful fjord."

Studying at one of the world's most prestigious ballet schools in San Francisco

Logi is studying at the San Francisco Ballet School in California, USA, and is the first Icelandic person to get this far in the programme, as its entry requirements are among the strictest in the world. In Iceland, there are not many resources for ballet dancers and only a few facilities suitable for practising this art form.
„I was one of the few to be offered a place in the 7th division at one of the world's most prestigious ballet schools in San Francisco, following the school's summer programme in 2022. I was offered a place to continue to the 8th division after the 2023 spring exam, which is the school's graduating year. I completed it and graduated as a ballet dancer after the 2024 spring exam. After that, I was offered a place in the trainee programme with the San Francisco Ballet, which only 4 of our 12 graduating boys received, and the same applied to the girls.“

About Creative Summer Jobs 2024

In the summer of 2021, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with the town's youth centre, Hamarinn, decided to revive the “Creative Summer Jobs” project, which had been run in the summer of 2017. Individuals and groups aged 18-25 were also invited to submit ideas for creative projects in Hafnarfjörður. Selected groups were given the opportunity to work on various creative projects in different artistic fields that would also liven up the town's social life, delighting tourists and residents in one way or another. The staff of Creative Summer Jobs, run as part of the Hafnarfjörður Summer School, are tasked with bringing the town to life, making it more fun, beautiful and diverse with artistic and creative events. The projects are varied and appeal to different age groups and interests. Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir is the project manager for Creative Summer Jobs.

This year, there are seven diverse groups and individuals working as part of the creative summer jobs scheme, and they will be featured weekly over the summer.
