Rán Sigurjónsdóttir, a 20-year-old creative and a graphic design student at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, is holding an educational art exhibition about the Maritime Museum in Hafnarborg from 25 July to 5 August, as part of the Creative Summer Jobs in Hafnarfjörður.

The memory of the museum lives on

The Aquarium in Hafnarfjörður operated from 1969 to 1987. Various exotic animal species were on display, among the most memorable of which were lions, apes and polar bears. The museum was well-attended and although the Sea Museum was closed late in the last century, its memory lives on.

Rán got the idea for a project and an exhibition about the Marine Museum from a conversation with her father about interesting facts about the town of Hafnarfjörður. The aim of the project is to educate people about the museum, particularly the younger generations who may not know that it ever existed. This summer, Rán has been working systematically to learn about the museum, interviewing people who remember it well and their experiences of it.

The results of the summer will be shown at Hafnarborg.

In collaboration with Creative Summer Jobs in Hafnarfjörður, an educational art exhibition about the Marine Museum at Hafnarborg in Hafnarfjörður will be held, open to all interested from 25th July to 5th August. The exhibition's official opening will be held on Thursday, 25th July from 4 pm to 6 pm.

„Entry to Hafnarborg is free and everyone is welcome. The exhibition will be located on the ground floor in the inner hall. Please come and step into an exotic world that is more than a little interesting in the modern day,“ says Rán Sigurjónsdóttir on the event's page.

About Creative Summer Jobs 2024

In the summer of 2021, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with the town's youth centre, Hamarinn, decided to revive the “Creative Summer Jobs” project, which had been run in the summer of 2017. Individuals and groups aged 18-25 were also invited to submit ideas for creative projects in Hafnarfjörður. Selected groups were given the opportunity to work on various creative projects in different artistic fields that would also liven up the town's social life, delighting tourists and residents in one way or another. The staff of Creative Summer Jobs, run as part of the Hafnarfjörður Summer School, are tasked with bringing the town to life, making it more fun, beautiful and diverse with artistic and creative events. The projects are varied and appeal to different age groups and interests. Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir is the project manager for Creative Summer Jobs.

This year, there are seven diverse groups and individuals working as part of the creative summer jobs scheme, and they will be featured weekly over the summer.
