Winter Festival 2025

Winter Festival 2025 will be held from 6–9 February and the festival will take place in all six municipalities of the capital region. This festival of light and darkness consists of three main pillars: Museum Night, Swimming Pool Night and Light Trail. Over 150 events are on offer, with numerous artists taking part to create a unique atmosphere in the city. All events are free of charge.

Here in Hafnarfjörður, we are enjoying both Swimming Pool Night and Museum Night together on the 7th and 8th of February. The museums in Hafnarfjörður, Ásvallalaug and Suðurbæjarlaug are actively taking part in the Winter Festival with a varied and fun programme for all ages. This weekend is also the last chance to enjoy the splendour of the lights in Hellisgerði.

Museum Night at the Museums of Hafnarfjörður

The town's museums are open to everyone on Museum Night on Friday, 7th February, between 6 pm and 10 pm, and as always, admission is free.

Art workshop – image: building

An art workshop will be offered in connection with the museum's current photography exhibitions. Visitors will have the opportunity to experiment with composition and thus practise their visual skills by arranging found objects. The workshop will be led by Unnur Mjöll S. Leifsdóttir, an artist and the Education and Outreach Project Manager.

Landnam – guided tour by torchlight
Búi Bjarmar Aðalsteinsson leads guests through the photography exhibition by Pétur Thomsen, Settlement, where visitors will walk through a darkened room with torches. The exhibition features landscape works that the photographer takes at night, illuminating the landscape with a flash to define the scene.

8:00 – 9:00  Black cats, a full moon and red-headed womenFolklorist Símon Jón Jóhannsson gives an intriguing lecture about his newly published book and guides us through superstitions of various kinds.

9:00 – 9:30  Margrét Lára Jónsdóttir plays the violin and Tómas Vigur Magnús plays the piano, performing a few classical and beautiful pieces at the end of the evening.

18:00-22:00 THROUGHBREEZE, RAIN AND CALM – Einar Lövdahl at the Museum Night

Welcome to a triple-part author's evening at Hafnarfjörður Library for Museum Night, where the guest of the evening will be Einar Lövdahl – a writer, musician and Icelandic scholar.
At the beginning of the programme, Einar will give a brief account of the novel. Through draught, which was published by Mál og menning last year, and read an extract from the book. Afterwards, he will perform original songs with wry lyrics about an offended man, restlessness and daydreaming, and the greyness of the capital region, to name but a few. Einar will round off the programme with a light-hearted talk on swearing in modern Icelandic.

Hafnarfjörður Library will be holding an open house from 6 p.m. on Museum Night! There will be arts and crafts, virtual reality games and fun until 8 p.m. There's always plenty to do at the library, with lots of books, tools and fun on Museum Night!

4pm – 10pm Cargo art? – Þorgeir Ólason „Toggi“

Reuse – recycling – remoulding – rearrangement. These words apply to all the works in the exhibition, which had their former life as shipping packaging, and Toggi has chosen to call it Cargo art?. Toggi was born and raised in Hafnarfjörður. A special exhibition opening is on Thursday, 6th February from 6-8 pm, and everyone is most welcome.

Ban Kúnn on Tjarnarvöllum

6:00 pm - 10:00 pm „If They Could Talk“ – Svavar's photography exhibition at Ban Kúnn 

Svavar G. Jónsson's interest in photography has now led to him owning well over six hundred cameras, the oldest of which dates from 1896. He plans to exhibit the collection at the Ban Kúnn restaurant on Museum Night 2025, on 7 February, and tell stories. „The start of this collection can be traced back to a „photography craze“ I got around my confirmation! Yes, that was nearly 60 years ago, so the collection contains a bit of everything,“ says Svavar. His cameras date from 1896 to the present day. This includes the very camera he bought with his confirmation money.

 

Swimming Pool Night – Saturday, 8th February, 4-8 pm

South Bay Pool – free from 4pm-6pm

    • 5 pm – The Sykátu Zumbees lead Aqua Zumba. It's recommended to bring a hat or swimming cap!

The Andaleikarnir at Ásvallalaug – free from 4pm-8pm!

Visitors to Ásvallalaug will get to experience a unique evening where all sorts of ducks will be in charge.

Swimming will be free from 4 p.m. in the many swimming pools of the capital region.

On Museum Night, visitors to the Winter Lights Festival can visit around fifty museums and see a wide variety of exhibitions in the capital region, as well as enjoy a lively and entertaining programme of events. Cultural institutions in Hafnarfjörður, the Library, the Folk Museum and Hafnarborg, also take part as usual. Admission to all museums and events is free for the evening.
