Skidding all over town

News

Despite staff working on gritting and salting roads and pavements all week, there has been little effect.

The ice and large piles of snow all over town have not gone unnoticed by anyone these days. Despite council workers having been busy treating streets and pavements with grit and salt all week, there is little sign of improvement. We ask residents to be careful and to join us in gritting and salting while the situation remains as it is.

Hafnarfjörður council workers have been working all week to treat streets and footpaths against ice and snow with grit and salt. The changeable weather; heat, rain and then frost, is making life difficult for council workers and residents alike. Sand is washed away quickly, even though all main roads have been gritted according to current practice.
priority routes around the town. However, the salt remains and eats away at the ice. Since October, 489 tonnes of salt have been spread on the town's roads and pavements. The situation has been worst this December, with over three hundred tonnes of salt used in this one month alone.

We ask all residents and visitors to the town to take care in the current conditions, particularly on the town's footpaths and cycle paths. We are aware of the problem and are responding to it as best we can.  For all those interested and able to lend a hand in our battle against the weather gods, please note that sand is available for collection from the Council's Service Centre, located on Norðurhólar.  Sand can be collected from buckets there, and bags and shovels are available on site. We encourage residents to be aware of their local area and to assist with sanding and gritting to ensure the safety of everyone.
