Four stood out for their innovation in primary schools
Four pupils from Víðistaðaskóli were among the winners in the primary school innovation competition at the beginning of this summer. Their ideas stood out from more than 500 entries from across the country.
Innovation of the younger generation
Pupils from Víðisstaðaskóli were successful in the primary school innovation competition at the end of the school year, winning both the community award and the main prize. The prize was presented by President Halla Tómasdóttir.
Katrín Svala Ólafsdóttir and María Lilja Davíðsdóttir, in Year 6 at Víðistaðaskóli, won the main prize of NKG 2026 for a helmet for a scooter. They designed a safety system for hire e-bikes where a helmet is connected to the bike and the bike will not start unless the helmet is being used.

Guðlaug Sóley Jokumsen Bergman and Elvar Ólafsson, also in Year 6, received the NKG Community Cup for the Salt Blower, which makes it easier to spread salt on icy surfaces. They also took another idea to the finals, which was the Nature App that encourages people to pick up litter.

Of these, 25 ideas were selected for the final, and a total of 38 students took part in the workshops and final events of NKG 2026.
On Saturday, 30th May, the splendid final event of the 2026 Primary School Innovation Competition took place at Sögutorgi in Sögur, at the Faculty of Education, University of Iceland. There, the creativity, courage and imagination of children from all over the country were celebrated.
The finalists took to the stage, presented their ideas, delivered short speeches and shared their experiences of the projects. There were also entertainment acts in which the students themselves took part, adding a personal and warm touch to the celebration.
One of the highlights of the day was the awards ceremony where Halla Tómasdóttir, President of Iceland and Patron of the Primary School Innovation Competition, presented the main awards and honoured the projects that stood out. At the final gala, the VILJI – 2026 Primary School Innovation Teacher's Encouragement Award was also presented.
