Strange fish in Flensburg Harbour

News

Around 400 Hafnarfjörður angling children aged 6-12 cast their lines in Flensborg Harbour in mild and fine weather today. There have never been more at this annual event.

Coal, red-bellied and beak-billed gulls on the poles

Around 400 young anglers from Hafnarfjörður, aged 6-12, took up their fishing rods at Flensborgarhöfn today in mild and fine weather. They competed to catch the most unusual fish, the biggest fish and the most fish. The winners received a fishing rod and a trophy for their catch and achievement.

There was such high demand that more fishing gear was prepared on site.

This annual pike fishing competition for the play schemes in Hafnarfjörður, which is also open to all Hafnarfjörður children aged 6-12, is one of the largest pike fishing competitions in the country.

„We had prepared around 400 fishing rods this year, and they had become a scarce commodity by the time everyone had arrived at the site. The staff from the work school therefore had to make more on the spot. So, we've had around 400 participants this year, which is a record,“ says Stella Björg Kristinsdóttir, manager of leisure activities in Hafnarfjörður. The competition has managed to make its mark on the hearts and minds of both children and parents and guardians, who often follow along nervously from the harbour quay.

Three young people received awards this year. Kamilla Rut Ágústsdóttir won the competition for the oddest fish. She caught a codling, and it was uncertain whether it was a redfish or a greyling. Ísabella Agla Óskarsdóttir won for the biggest fish, a 327-gram codling. Máni Arnórsson was the winner for the most fish, catching 3 cod. He barely had time to collect his prize and arrived late to the awards ceremony, as he had carried on fishing after the competition ended and caught one more whiting.

Open dorghunting competition for 6-12 year old Hafnfirðingar

Every year, the summer courses in Hafnarfjörður organise a pike-fishing competition at Flensborg Pier, which is open to all children aged 6 to 12. For around 30 years, the municipality of Hafnarfjörður has organised this pike-fishing competition, and hundreds of local children take part each year. The excitement is always just as great. Summer leisure activities leaders, together with staff from the holiday club, provided robust supervision during the competition, and the sailing club Þytur had a rescue boat patrolling the area to ensure safety.
