Glass on neighbourhood stations
In Hafnarfjörður, there are neighbourhood bins in seven locations. At all the sites, there are bins for paper, plastic and glass, as well as clothes bins from RKÍ and bottle bins from the Scouts at some of them.
In February, glass collection began at 37 neighbourhood collection points in the capital region. At the glass containers, residents can return any type of glass generated at home, such as jam jars, glass bottles and other glass containers, free of charge. Glass can be either clear or coloured but must be clean and containers empty. In the coming years, glass containers will be installed at all neighbourhood stations in the capital region, and the rollout is scheduled to be completed in 2019.

Versatile uses in glass
Glass collection is an important part of the preparations for a gasification and composting plant planned for Álfsnes in 2017, as it will improve the quality of the compost produced there. Currently, glass and minerals make up just over 51% of what residents of the capital region put in their grey household bins, or about 8 kg per person in 2015. Glass is used as a filling material in construction, serving the same purpose as gravel. This reduces the need for quarrying and the environmental impact of such activities, as well as lowering costs.
