The town receives the key to a new library
The City of Hafnarfjörður was today presented with the key to the premises housing the city's new library in the Firði shopping centre. The library's move is underway. It is scheduled to open to residents on 1 July.
Mayor Valdimar Víðisson says there is great excitement about the library's new location. „Our new library will be so much more than a library. It will attract different groups and serve as a community centre here in Hafnarfjörður,“ he says.
„Here, book lovers can choose from tens of thousands of book titles and read. They can also listen to podcasts and music, create their own things, attend courses and a variety of events in a new and magnificent multi-purpose hall. It will be buzzing with life here in July, and we can't wait,“ says Valdimar.
The new library building is almost 1,700 square metres in size. Of this, around 550 square metres are in the new Fjörður building at 26-30 Strandgata, which is rising rapidly these days. The alterations and development at Fjörður are the largest project to have taken place in Hafnarfjörður's town centre for decades.
Guðmundur Bjarni Harðarson, managing director of Fjarðar, says there is a glimpse of a new library and now the City of Hafnarfjörður is taking up the baton. „The flooring materials have arrived, covering the entire museum and its spaces. The new library will be a cultural centre with entertainment for all age groups.“ The library will be a vibrant community hub for all ages and visitors to the Fjords.
220 residents of Fjarðar and Hafnarfjörður signed a contract for the library in Firði in December 2020. „I have always said that the library will be the heart of the core,“ says Guðmundur. The inspiration came from Oslo in Norway.
„This change helps the city centre to grow and flourish and become more vibrant. More businesses will come to open, strengthen and flourish on Strandgatan,“ he says.
„Yes, we're upgrading Hafnarfjörður and in doing so, we're creating the groundwork for an exceptionally strong shopping centre in the heart of Hafnarfjörður,“ says Guðmundur. „Here you get personal service, all in the same place.“
