Hafnarfjörður illuminated with LED lights
The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður has almost completed the conversion of its street lighting to LED. 95% lamp posts use LED lighting. LED lighting has also replaced the old light bulbs in many of the municipality's institutions, as the savings are significant.
Light splendour with LED bulbs
The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður has almost completed the conversion of its street lighting to LED. 951 TP3T lamp posts now use LED lighting, and only the older industrial areas of the town remain to be converted. This is in preparation.
Sigurður Haraldsson, Head of the Environment and Planning Department, says the council's LED conversion was initiated just over four years ago. The operational savings are significant, at around 20-30 per cent compared to before, as LEDs use less electricity. Two hundred million was invested in the project three years ago, and work has been systematically carried out on the rollout. „We got off to a fast start and are leading the way among municipalities.“
Savings from LED lights
Sigurður says that LED equipment is constantly getting cheaper. It is often possible to replace old light bulbs with LED bulbs, but sometimes it is more cost-effective to replace the lamp. New buildings are fitted with LED lighting from the outset, but over the past year, LED lights have been installed in schools and nurseries. The work will continue over the next three years.
„We received a boost in funding for the LED conversion and we aim to complete it as quickly as we can, as we see that electricity prices have risen.“ There is therefore a great deal to be gained.
The service is being tendered
Electricity services have been regularly put out to tender in Hafnarfjörður since 2009, and the service provider has been changed each time. „The tenders are held every three to four years. They are extremely important for the best use of the municipality's funds.“
Yes, Hafnarfjörður is one of the municipalities leading the way in LED lighting.
