Leisure grant income thresholds for the over-67s increased

News

The income threshold for the leisure grant for those aged 67 and over will increase at the end of the month to align with the threshold for the property tax waiver for pensioners on old-age and disability pensions. The change was approved at the last council meeting.

Leisure Grant for 67+

It has been agreed that the income threshold for the Leisure Grant for those aged 67 and over will be increased in line with the threshold for the property tax exemption for pensioners on old-age and disability pensions. These changes ensure that those who receive the 100% property tax discount are also entitled to the leisure grant. This promotes the activity and improved quality of life of older people. The town council unanimously approved the increase at its last meeting.

The change is important and aims to encourage older residents of Hafnarfjörður to participate in health-promoting sports and leisure activities, as well as to improve the general health and fitness of this age group. It was implemented following recommendations from the Council for Older People.

Aiming for a diverse range of services

The policy is for the town to offer a diverse range of services for older people in the town. Among other things, steps have been taken to increase the range of services, such as the Janus project, aqua aerobics and Hress fitness.

The leisure grant can be used widely. It covers members and recognised organisations that provide organised instruction or training. The payment is 4,000 kr. per month for as long as participation continues, or up to a total of 48,000 kr. per year.

Leisure fees are means-tested and take into account the income of individuals and married couples, based on the most recently filed tax return.

Income threshold updated annually

Means-tested payments are provided to those with income below the thresholds for the property tax exemption for the home of elderly and disabled pensioners, based on a 100% rate. The income thresholds are published in the fee schedule on the Hafnarfjörður website and are updated annually in January in line with the reference year's wage index.

The annual fee is payable in one instalment upon presentation of a payment receipt and must be received by the end of the year for which the fee applies. If payment receipts are not received by the required deadline, the payment will lapse.
