We are looking for a driven and dynamic department head to join us in our ambitious school community at Lækjarskóli.  

Lækjarskóli has a history dating back to 1877 and is situated in a beautiful, green environment by the stream in Hafnarfjörður. There are around 450 pupils. All pupils from Year 5 to Year 10 have their own tablet to use. During the last academic year, we have been working purposefully towards three main goals: Home-school partnership, health and well-being, and collaboration.

The motto of Lækjarskóli is responsibility, respect and safety. The school operates according to the SMT school approach, which means that the emphasis is on approaching students in a positive way, paying more attention to good behaviour and creating a positive school atmosphere. 

Several years ago, the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) began. UDL is a methodology based on the research of David Rose (Boston Harvard, 1984). UDL provides students with the opportunity to learn in different ways and to demonstrate their skills in different ways. Students are active and have an influence on their own learning, and the aim is to eliminate the barriers that stand in the way of student success. 

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Manages the day-to-day work at the youngest year group in collaboration with the headteachers, teachers and parents.
  • Works to develop school operations in collaboration with management and colleagues.
  • Promoting the welfare of students in collaboration with parents and other professionals.
  • Participates in building a strong team at the workplace, together with the management team.
  • Works in accordance with the school's policy on SMT school skills, which is designed to create a good atmosphere in schools and ensure the safety and welfare of pupils and staff.
  • Other tasks as per the job description and as assigned by a superior.

Education and competency requirements:

  • Teaching qualifications (Licence to be attached to the application)
  • Experience of teaching in a primary school is a requirement.
  • Further education in management and/or education or pedagogy is an advantage.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of SMT school skills desirable.
  • Leadership skills and the will to build a strong team spirit
  • Initiative, positivity and a burning desire to work in a creative and ambitious environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good organisational skills, a good level of independence and conscientiousness.
