The Education Council proposed at its meeting this week an increase of 50% in the budget for book purchases in nurseries and primary schools, for the purchase of arts and crafts materials, and for the Children's Film and Book Festival, totalling 3.6 million króna.

The Education Committee has approved a proposal to the Town Council to increase the budget for purchasing books for the town's schools and for craft materials by 50%, as well as to provide 700,000 krónur for a cinema visit. festival, which takes place this February. This is to further support the literacy project currently underway in the schools of the City of Hafnarfjörður.

Library and information specialists in Hafnarfjörður's primary schools recently urged education authorities to provide the school libraries with more funding for book purchases, as this could have a decisive impact on children's literacy in Hafnarfjörður.  The headteachers of the primary schools reiterated this challenge at a meeting with the mayor and a department head at the beginning of this year, and nursery headteachers also expressed their concerns about insufficient funding for the purchase of books and craft materials. An ambitious literacy project, 'Reading is the Game of Life', is in full swing in the town's nursery and primary schools, and one of the conditions for its success is that there is a sufficient supply of books within the schools.

The Education Committee proposed at its meeting this week an increase of 50% in the budget for purchasing books for nurseries and primary schools, for buying craft materials, and for the Children's Film and Book Festival, totalling 3.6 million króna. It was proposed that the implementation be financed by a portion of the savings realised through tenders for various services, including within the nursery and primary schools. It was intended from the outset to retain the savings generated by the tendering process within the departments, and this was therefore the way the challenges from the schools were addressed. The Education Committee welcomed these views at its meeting this week and unanimously approved the proposal.
