New exhibition about elves in Hellisgerði

The exhibition highlights the rich folklore tradition associated with Hafnarfjörður and the belief that the town is home to one of the country's most populous communities of elves.

Hellisgerði, Hafnarfjörður's pleasure garden, now takes visitors on an adventurous journey into the world of elves and fairies with a new exhibition that was recently opened. The exhibition highlights the rich folklore tradition associated with Hafnarfjörður and the belief that the town is home to one of the country's most populous communities of elves.
The exhibition invites visitors to discover a tradition of storytelling that has endured through the ages, and to develop an interest in the nature and culture unique to Hafnarfjörður. Through lively stories and fun experiences, visitors can see how the world of elves has shaped the ideas, art, and atmosphere in the garden. “Hellisgerði is a unique place where history and nature meet. The exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to walk around the garden and, in the process, learn about the fairy tales connected to Hafnarfjörður.,“ says Svanhvít Tryggvadóttir, specialist at the Hafnarfjörður Museum of Local History.
Adventures and legends come to life
Visitors are encouraged to walk around the garden, look at the exhibition and experience the fairy world with all their senses – for the story goes that fairies are very shy visitors, but lively and curious for those who pay attention. Each sign has a QR code that visitors are encouraged to scan onto their phone. The QR code contains information about From where in Hafnarfjörður the story comes, and it is easy to take a walk to the elves' dwellings.
