The social distancing rule will be changed from 2 metres to 1 metre, and the maximum number of people who can gather will increase from 100 to 200 when new rules on gathering restrictions come into effect on Monday, 7 September. This is the main content of a new regulation by Svandís Svavarsdóttir, Minister of Health, on restrictions on gatherings. The changes are in line with the recommendations of the Director of Public Health.  Special precautions will remain in place for school activities, but the school community has been working with a 1-metre social distancing rule between staff for the past few weeks without
that face masks are used. The 2-metre distancing requirement will continue to apply for
parties not connected with the school.

Other changes to the social gathering restrictions made by the regulation are as follows:

  • The maximum number at swimming and bathing facilities and fitness centres is reduced from half of the permitted maximum number of guests according to the operating licence to 75%.
  • Sports, the performing arts and other cultural activities can take place despite the 1-metre rule, i.e. physical contact is permitted. Spectators are subject to the general rules on 1 metre distancing and a limit of 200 people per venue.

The Minister of Health's regulation has been sent to the Government Gazette for publication and will come into force on Monday, 7 September.
