The flags of the Nordic countries were flown at the town limits to mark the day of the Nordics – a day of Nordic cooperation and friendship. The Nordic Society in Iceland will be 103 years old this year.

Nordic Day – a day of Nordic cooperation and friendship – is today, 23rd March!

Hafnarfjörður has twin towns around the world and became a member of the Nordic Twin Town Association with Frederiksberg in Denmark, Uppsala in Sweden, Bærum in Norway and Hämeenlinna in Finland in 1951. Then, Hafnarfjörður has its twin towns Tvöroyori in the Faroe Islands and Illulissat in Greenland. Cooperation between the towns began after the Second World War when they felt the need to strengthen the relationship between the Nordic nations.

The flags of the Nordic countries were flown at the Town Hall of Hafnarfjörður, Strandgata 6, to mark the 103rd anniversary of the Nordic Society.

Today, these twin towns primarily focus on cultural exchange, sporting and commercial links, and meet regularly at biennial twinning festivals. The exchanges consist of events for youth, sports and cultural groups from the towns, as well as conferences and seminars on various common issues for the Nordic towns. Every two years, young people in Hafnarfjörður aged 16-18 have the opportunity to apply to participate in a twinning event which rotates between the partner towns. The next twinning event will be held next year, in May 2026.
